Journey to South Africa: Supporting Wombs of the World

Shekita Long • August 15, 2025

I'm going to South Africa!

This year, I have the honor of traveling to Johannesburg, South Africa to study and work alongside Dr. Mmatshilo Motsei, a visionary healer, activist, and founder of Wombs of the World. This opportunity is more than a trip — it’s a sacred exchange of wisdom, culture, and birthwork traditions that I will bring back to our Detroit community.

Through Wombs of the World, I will deepen my understanding of culturally-rooted perinatal care, community healing, and the reclamation of traditional birth practices. This experience will directly inform my work with Plant Parenthood Detroit and the Lunar Doula Collective, allowing me to integrate ancestral knowledge into the support I provide to families here at home.

My Goal

I need to raise $5,200 by November 1, 2025 to cover program tuition, travel, lodging, and related costs. Every contribution — big or small — moves me closer to bringing this dream to life and sharing the gifts of this training with the parents and communities I serve.

Becoming a parent is a profound journey filled with joy, excitement, and, for many, unexpected challenges. As a cultural and community labor and birth doula who advocates for mental health awareness, I want to address a vital topic that affects many new parents: postpartum mental health. If you're navigating this journey and feeling overwhelmed, please know that you're not alone.
